How to Troubleshoot uTorrent

How to Troubleshoot uTorrent thumbnail
Make sure your router is working.

Utorrent is one of the most popular file-sharing programs on the Internet. It is faster and uses fewer system resources than its major competitors, such as Limewire. This is less of a concern for users who have newer, more powerful computers, but uTorrent may be a better choice for those running older hardware. Fixing problems associated with uTorrent is usually not difficult.

Verify that you are connected to the Internet by opening a Web browser and trying to connect to Google.com. If you are not, try disconnecting from your network. Unplug your router for about 15 to 30 seconds and then plug the power cable back in.

    • 2

Make sure uTorrent has the appropriate permission to access the Internet. In Windows XP, this is not usually a problem, but for users of Windows Vista and 7, it may be necessary. Right-click on the uTorrent icon and click on "Run as administrator." Test to see if uTorrent works. If it does, no further steps are needed.

    • 3

Make sure that your router settings conform to uTorrent's requirements. Most routers do not have to be modified to work with uTorrent, but some, especially those that tout themselves as more secure than other routers, need to have certain ports opened. This procedure is different for just about every router, so check your router's support page for more information. If there is nothing wrong with your router's settings, move on to the next step.

Check or modify your firewall settings if you have a security suite such as McAfee or Norton. The simplest way to do this is to open your Norton or McAfee control center and change the firewall setting to "low." Windows users may have to disable the Windows Firewall; this can be done in the "security options" menu from within the control panel.

    • 5

Reinstall uTorrent. If none of the previous solves your problem, there may be something wrong with your installation of uTorrent. In the control panel, open the Add/Remove programs menu, find uTorrent and click "Uninstall." When uTorrent has been successfully removed, navigate to uTorrent's website and download and the installation file.
