How to Hide an IP to Play a Game

How to Hide an IP to Play a Game thumbnail
Some gamers don't like being detected when playing online.

An IP works as an Internet identification number. IP addresses are used to detect when someone enters the Internet. Therefore, the user has no privacy whatsoever. The same procedure is applied to Multiplayer Online games. This is an unsettling topic for gamers since nobody wants to be detected. Some gamers want to play anonymously to avoid awkward encounters with fellow gamers they don't want to see. Maybe their accounts were banned for some reason and they wish to play again. Maybe the game is not available in their respective countries. Two methods exist to solve this problem: freeware software or proxy servers.

Instructions

  1. Using Freeware to Hide an IP

    • 1

Navigate to the Tor Project website in "Resources" to download the Tor software, the freeware specially developed to hide IP addresses. Go to the options located on the top of the website and click on the "Download" option.

    • 2

Select your respective operating system--Mac, Windows or Linux. Click on the stable version to download. Wait until the software is fully downloaded. Install it and select the language of your preference. Restart your Internet browser once the installation is complete.

    • 3

Open your Internet browser again. Check the rightmost bottom part of your browser. See a new option called "Tor Enabled." To disable it, you just have to click on the new option. When enabled, the Tor software will provide you with a new random IP. Go to whatismyIP to check on your new IP.

    Using Proxy Servers

    • 4

Access a reliable proxy list. A proxy server provides its own IP address to the websites you visit, therefore giving you complete anonymity. A reliable proxy list is xproxy.com. This provides a wide range of different proxy servers. Two other separate categories are UK proxy (proxy servers with UK IP addresses) and US proxy.

    • 5

Go to the Proxy List tab located on top of the website. Select one proxy server and copy the IP address.

    • 6

Go to the menu bar of your Internet browser. For Firefox, go to the "Tools" tab. Click on the "Options" button and choose the "Advanced" tab. A new box will appear. Click on the "Network" tab and click on "Settings." A new window called "Connection Settings" will pop up. For Internet Explorer, go to the "Tools" option in the menu bar and click on "Internet Options." Click on the "Network" tab and choose "LAN settings" located in the bottom part of the window.

    • 7

Select the "Manual Proxy Configuration" option. Erase the default proxy server IP address from the HTTP Proxy box. Write the previously copied proxy server IP address (the one that you took from the Proxy List), in the white box. Leave the number of ports as default, don't change it and click "OK." For Internet Explorer, check the little box on the Proxy Server category. Proceed to copy the IP address from the selected proxy server. Click "OK." Enter the game of your preference: Any problems that you had with your previous IP address will be eliminated by now.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tor Project is a freeware software, whereas the majority of software for hiding IP addresses are shareware, or they charge you a fee.

  • The most reliable websites to view your IP address are cmyip.com and whatismyip.com.
