How to Load PC Music Into the iPod Shuffle

Save

The Shuffle is Apple's smallest iPod, both in terms of size and storage capacity. The players, which are smaller than a pack of gum, can hold up to 1,000 songs, depending on which model you have. And while it lacks the display screen and advanced features that other iPod models--the Nano, Classic and Touch---have, the Shuffle can play the same type of audio files as those models. Because it also uses the iTunes software for adding music, the iPod Shuffle can be used on a PC as well as a Mac.

Things You'll Need

  • PC
  • ITunes 9 or better
  • iPod Shuffle USB cable

Adding Music From Your PC to iTunes

  • Open the iTunes software on your computer by double-clicking on the desktop shortcut--if you have created one--or by selecting it from the programs folder on your PC.

  • Click "File" in the top left-hand corner of the iTunes interface to open the main control menu.

  • Scroll down to "Add File to Library" and click on it. This will open a pop-up search window, which will allow you to search your computer for any music you may have stored on it.

  • Select the folder where your music is stored by clicking on it in the search window. If you're not sure where your music is stored, folders such as "My Music" and "My Documents" are common places to begin searching.

  • Highlight the song you want to add to your iTunes library by clicking on it. You can add multiple songs at the same time by holding down the "Ctrl" key and clicking on more songs.

  • Click on the "Open" button at the bottom of the pop-up window and the selected songs will be added to your iTunes library.

Transfer Music From Your PC to Your iPod Shuffle

  • Connect the USB end of the supplied cable to a high-speed USB port on your computer and the other end of the cable to the headphone jack on the top of your iPod Shuffle.

  • Open iTunes on your computer by either double-clicking the desktop icon or by selecting it from your Programs folder. Depending on your computer's settings, iTunes might launch automatically when your iPod Shuffle is connected to your PC.

  • Click on "Music" below the "Library" tab on the left-hand side of iTunes--this will bring up all of the music that you have added to your iTunes library.

  • Select the song you want to add to your iPod Shuffle by clicking on it in the main iTunes window--select multiple songs by holding down the "Ctrl" key and clicking on more songs.

  • Drag the selected songs to the iPod Shuffle icon, which will appear in the "Device" list when your iPod Shuffle is connected to your computer. When the icon becomes highlighted, release the mouse button and the selected songs will copy to your iPod.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also add audiobooks and podcasts you have saved to your iTunes library by using the same method.
  • The iPod Shuffle will support and play multiple formats of music including MP3s, AAC and protected AAC files. It won't, however, support or play WMA (windows media) files. In order to play WMA files, you will have to convert them through iTunes before they will play on your iPod Shuffle
