One way to preserve the memory of pregnancy is with a belly cast.

Pregnancy is a special time in a family's life. As the family prepares for the birth of a child, they often celebrate each stage or progression in the pregnancy as a milestone in the growth of their family. There are many ways to create memories of your pregnancy. One very tangible way is to make a pregnancy belly cast. Years after your child is born, you will have a keepsake with which to remember your pregnancy.

Precut the plaster of Paris gauze strips in lengths of 4 to 5 inches. Measure 1/3 cup of dry plaster of Paris and add it to warm water in a bowl. Stir well with a spoon. Prepare two more bowls with the same mixture, so you don't run out.

    • 2

Rub petroleum jelly all over your belly cast recipient's belly. This will help the cast come off more easily and make cleanup easier for the recipient. Have the pregnant woman wear old pants and give her some paper towels to wipe away any drips. Some women like to have the belly cast include their breasts and arms. If this is the case, petroleum jelly should be applied in those areas, too.

    • 3

Dip the strips of gauze into the plaster and water solution. Allow excess water to drip back into the bowl. Lay the gauze around the perimeter of the belly, with the ends and sides overlapping other pieces of gauze. Smooth the strips as you add each one; you'll see the edges blend together. Work your way in with the strips of gauze until the person's entire belly is covered, as well as any other desired areas. Repeat this step again to add a second layer of gauze strips to the belly cast.

    • 4

Allow the cast to sit on the woman's belly for 15 minutes. Remove it slowly by loosening the edges and lifting it gently away from her belly.

Provide soap, water and a clean towel so the belly cast recipient can wash the petroleum jelly and any plaster off her skin.

Place the cast in a dry location and allow it to sit for 24 hours so the plaster of Paris can harden completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have all your supplies at hand and ready to go and make sure your recipient has used the bathroom and has all she needs to be comfortable.

  • Lay a plastic drop cloth on the floor beneath your recipient for easier clean up.
