How to Make Bird Feeders With Preschoolers

How to Make Bird Feeders With Preschoolers thumbnail
A pine cone bird feeder is simple to make.

Preschoolers love crafts, especially when they get to do them with Mom or Dad. There's just something about working with their little hands that makes this craft special and fun to do. Making a bird feeder with a preschooler will allow you to spend some quality time with your preschooler.

Afterwards, you and your preschooler can enjoy watching the birds as they come to feed at the bird feeder you've made. Learn to identify the different types of birds and maybe have your preschooler draw their own pictures of the birds feeding.

Instructions

    • 1

Help your preschooler smear and spread butter or peanut butter (whichever one you have on hand) on the pine cone. Ensure that your preschooler gets all the nooks and crannies in the pine cone coated with the butter or peanut butter.

    • 2

Tie the string to the top of the pine cone. Use enough string to give yourself room to hang the feeder at a window level or eye level. If you wish, it may be looped in order to slip it over a tree branch.

    • 3

Pour the bird seed into the paper bag. Drop the pine cone covered in butter or peanut butter into the bird seed and roll it around so that the bird seed is embedded into the butter or peanut butter. Repeat this step until your pine cone is completely covered in the bird seed. You may need to gently press the bird seed into the butter or peanut butter as you go to cover all of the open areas.

    • 4

Hang your pine cone bird feeder from a tree. Its nice to have near a window so that the preschooler can look out the window and watch the birds coming to feed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Encourage your preschooler to see the birds feeding on his or her creation.

  • Birds will come to depend on this for food, so be sure to keep one up at all times.
