Georgia residents who meet the requirements must file a federal tax return every year, as well as a Georgia state income tax return. Residents who have overpaid their taxes during the tax year in question will receive a refund from the state of Georgia. Georgia residents can check the status of their state tax refund once their returns have been filed by accessing the Georgia Department of Revenue's website.

      Log on to the Georgia Department of Revenue website (see Resources) and scroll down to the "Where's My Refund" link and click on it.

      Enter your social security number and the amount of your expected refund in dollars and cents in the provided boxes and click "Submit."

      View the results of your Georgia state income tax refund.

      To find out the status of your refund by telephone, call 877-423-6711. You will be prompted to push "2" for information on your personal tax information. You will then be prompted to enter your social security number and the whole dollar amount of your refund. If refund information is available, it will be provided.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you filed your tax return electronically, information will be available for you to view six to 10 days after Georgia has acknowledged receipt of your tax return.

  • If you filed a paper return and no information is available, click on the "Where Is My Return" tab on the web page to find out the status of your return.
