Instructions

Choose a theme. Does your father remember the 1920s or 1930s particularly well, or does he hark back to the 1940s or 1950s? Think back to which time period he seemed to recall more fondly, and talk to close relatives and friends to get an idea of which decade is closest to his heart.

    • 2

Research the time period. Thanks to the Internet there are many resources available to find out everything you need to know about a particular decade -- what was popular in pop culture, the trendiest fashions back then, the music that was on top of the charts -- anything that can be used to make the birthday party like a trip back in time. Be sure to keep track of all of this information with a notebook.

Purchase the items you will use to decorate the room for the party. While you can find some colorful balloons, signs, utensils and other party materials at any party store, going to antique shops or online to sites like eBay will probably be the best bet to find vintage items for the time period you are looking for. For instance, you may want to find a Victrola for the Roaring '20s, or wall calendars and grocery products from the 1940s to place around the room.

Make sure that the food served is palatable to your Dad's tastes. He may not eat much, but you want the menu to match his diet while still being delicious! Talk to his carers to find out if there are any foods that are off limits, or special dietary requirements such as low sodium or no dairy. If the birthday party is going to have a childhood theme, consider favorite foods of his from that time -- churned ice cream, strawberry shortcake, or hot dogs. These are easily prepared things that everyone at the party can enjoy.

Find entertainment in keeping with your theme. In addition to finding popular music from the time period you're focused on and having it play in the background, consider creating a trivia game based on fun facts from popular culture and some questions about your family from that time. This can be played by everyone at the party, but will especially be appreciated by older relatives and friends who are fans of nostalgia. Since the 90th birthday is a big milestone, you may consider asking everyone to dress in themed costume clothing such as 1920s flapper dresses for the ladies, or 1940s Zoot suits for the gentlemen. Also consider putting together a small dance routine to one of your father's old favorite songs, doing moves that were popular during that time period.
