Use your digital camera to obtain some great images. Download images onto your computer.

Choose three of four images to upload to your favorite microstock site. A few mentionable microstock sites are: Dreamstime, Fotolio, Istockphoto. Create an account with each. You may have the option of being an exclusive contributor. If you choose to be exclusive to that particular site you will get a slightly higher rate for royalty on your photo. The downside is that any image you upload that is selected by the site cannot be used on any other microstock site.

Upload images through the microstock upload portal. You can anticipate a minimum of 48 hours for your photo to reviewed by the editorial team. The pay rate and pricing structure is largely based on your own preference and the licensing rights you are willing to grant the microstock site.

Describe and keyword your images. This is one of the more difficult facets of the process. Once your image is uploaded you will be directed to a page with all your pending files. Here you will be required to enter data about your image. This data includes a name for your image, a brief description of you image and the keywords. Keywords are essential as this how potential buyers will find you image.

Use a very detailed description and choose keywords that will drive a buyer directly to your image. Your keywords should be based on the content and concept of your image. Once the keywording is complete your photo is ready for the screening process. All images submitted will undergo an editorial review by the microstock team of editors. Once your photo is approved by the editorial team your image is placed on their sites for purchase by the world. The rate of payment is sometimes a complicated structure and every site has it own system.

Tips & Warnings
Images should be high resolution, minimum resolution is 3 Megapixels.
Don't get discouraged if your first few images are not accepted.
Licensing rights range from a very limited web only license to full rights release. A full rights release enables that buyer to utilize that image in whatever format they may choose.
As the market becomes saturated microstock editors are more critical of the technical accuracy of your images. Images should be sharp and correct exposure is critical.
One item to keep in mind is that you will not normally be paid until your account has reach a certain threshold of paid downloads, this is normally one hundred dollars. Most sites offer a variety of payment options, nearly all of them include Paypal.
