How to Write a Proper Ending to a Thank You Note

Ending a thank you note can be simple.

Thank you notes are written for various reasons and to various people. As a result, confusion about how to write the note or how to end the note is common. It becomes frustrating after a letter is finished to decide which ending is best and which endings are inappropriate. While each thank you note is different, there are some basic rules that make ending a thank you note easier.

1. Evaluate the formality of the thank-you note. Some thank-you notes, such as those to an employer, require a formal ending, while other thank-you notes are personal and can be ended with less formality.

2. Consider your relationship with the individual receiving the thank-you note. A personal, close relationship allows for a personal ending to the note, while a thank you note to an interviewer, employer or co-worker will be less personal and more businesslike.

3. Wrap up the note with an extra "thank you." Before the final closing, but at the end of the note, it is always appropriate to repeat the reason for gratitude. Formal and informal thank-you notes should always reiterate the reason you're thanking the individual.

4. Close with a simple "Sincerely" closing, or a similar phrase. The closing phrase before you sign the note should be appropriate to the relationship and formality of the note. A thank-you note to a family member might close with "Love" or "With Love," while a thank you note to a co-worker or employer should close with "Sincerely."

5. Sign the thank-you note by hand. A note sent through the mail could be typed, but it should always be signed by hand to give even typed thank-you notes a personal touch. The only exception would be a thank-you note sent by email.
