The Bell South DSL modem allows one network device to connect to an outside line to the Internet. While this may be fine for a household with one computer, it leaves no options for households with multiple computers and other network devices. The solution is a router, which is a device that splits one connection to multiple devices. A very popular household router is the Linksys WRT54G. It provides wireless G as well as four wired connections, making it efficient for most households.

      Disconnect the Ethernet cable connecting the PC to the modem from the PC's end (if necessary).

      Plug the open end of the Ethernet cable into the "Internet" port on the back of the router. This is the Ethernet port that is separate from the row of four on the Linksys WRT54g.

      Unplug the power from both the Linksys router and the DSL modem. Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.

      Connect the power back to to the DSL modem. Allow 10 seconds to pass, then connect the power to the router as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use additional Ethernet cables to connect the router to desktops and other network devices. The Ethernet cables may be plugged into any of the four Ethernet ports lined up on the back of the Linksys router.
