How to Set Up a Dial Up Modem at Home
Setting up a dial-up modem at home is a fairly simple process that does not require anything but a basic knowledge of how to navigate your computer. While a dial-up modem offers slower connection speeds than cable and DSL modems, there can be advantages to having dial-up Internet service. Perhaps the biggest advantage is the cost; if is almost always cheaper for dial-up service than for other types of service.

Click the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel."

Click the "Create a new network connection" button. Click "Next."

Choose "Connect to the Internet." Click "Next."

Choose "Set up my connection manually." Click "Next."

Select "Connect using a dial-up modem." Click "Next."

Type a name of the connection you are creating. For example, you could type, "My Dial-up Connection." Click "Next."

Type your area code and phone number. Click "Next."

Create a user name and password and type them into the appropriate fields. Click "Next."

Click "Finish." The "Connect" dialog box will appear.

Click "Dial." Your dial-up modem will now connect to the Internet.
