Some people view their dogs as part of the family.

Odors are an inevitable part of having a dog as a pet. Your dog may leave odors around the house if he has an accident or simply needs a bath. There's no need to sacrifice a clean smelling house just so your dog can remain indoors with you. Give your dog a bath and use supplies readily available in most homes to rid your home of dog odor so the two of you can enjoy your time together, without the smells.

Combine 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water in a plastic spray bottle. Cut a fresh lemon and squeeze a little lemon juice into the spray bottle. Mist the vinegar and lemon solution in rooms with dog odor to provide a natural air freshener and odor neutralizer.

Pour baking soda into small bowls and leave them in rooms where dog odor exists. Place the bowls of baking soda out of reach of your dog. Change the baking soda in the bowls once a week.

Pour baking soda over the urine stains. Add a few drops of water and dishwashing liquid to the baking soda. With a clean cloth scrub the mixture into the fibers of your upholstery or carpet. Allow the solution to sit until it dries completely, then vacuum up dried cleaning solution.

Place dryer sheets in the trash cans in each room affected by dog odor. This will add a fresh scent to the room, and when you empty the garbage you can add a new dryer sheet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash your dog regularly, using a shampoo made specifically for pets. He will feel better and your home will smell cleaner.

  • Dog bedding and toys can harbor odors. Wash any washable bedding and toys. Take non-washables outdoors, spray with vinegar spray and allow them to air dry.
