Fireplace Mantel Installation Instructions
Installing mantels on fireplaces has a long history. The tradition of installing a mantel to frame or define a fireplace has lasted for as long as man figured out how to bring fire into the house and enclose it. The materials varied: marble, stone, plaster, wood or whatever non-flammable material was indigenous to the area. Installing a wood mantel can frame the fireplace as well as bring beauty to your room. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Pencil and paper
- 1 by 2 lumber
- Table saw
- Stud finder
- Level
- Screws and screw gun
- Wood mantel
- Drill bit
- Finish nails
- Hammer
- Wood putty
- Finish or paint
- Paint brush

Measure the outside dimensions--both sides and the top. Write these measurements down.

Cut the 1 by 2 lumber to those measurements.

Find studs with a stud finder and mark their position on to the top and sides.

Fit a 1 by 2 across the top. Make sure it's level, then fasten it to the wall with wood screws.into the studs.

Fasten 1 by 2s on the sides, running perpendicular to the floor and make sure they are level.

Drill pilot holes in the front of the mantel piece, in the top and sides, at least 10 inches apart.

Secure the mantel to the 1 by 2 by nailing finish nails though the pilot holes you drilled in step 6. Fill the holes with wood putty.

Finish the mantel with paint or stain.
