How to Play the Jewish Shofar

How to Play the Jewish Shofar thumbnail
A shofar is an instrument made from a ram's horn.

A shofar is a ram's horn that is traditionally blown by Jewish people on Rosh Hashana and at the conclusion of Yom Kippur. The sound of the ram's horn symbolizes a call to repentance and the sound of sobs, calling out to God for forgiveness of one's sins. It is easy to get a shofar to make a sound, but difficult to learn to play it properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate the shofar so that the thickest part of the mouthpiece is at the top.

    • 2

Place the shofar's mouthpiece up against either the right or left side of your lips.

    • 3

Take a deep breath and wet and tighten your lips, preparing them to produce a sound.

    • 4

Let the air out through your lips as though you were making a buzzing sound.

    • 5

Push air upward and tighten you lips even more to create a higher note.
