How to get paid for independent films on YouTube

How to get paid for independent films on YouTube thumbnail
Make your videos rentable on YouTube.

YouTube Rentals as of May 2010 allows rental of movie titles from selected film festivals and movie producers. In a related move, YouTube's rental partner program also allows independent filmmakers the opportunity to distribute and earn income via approved video or film uploads. Unlike a 2009 previous partner program that only allowed you to earn income off AdSense advertising, you can charge their viewers directly and keep 100 percent of the video rights. If you are a filmmaker, you have another path toward earning revenue and become recognized outside of big movie studios.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the YouTube Rental Partner Beta website and fill out the application form. The success of your application will depend on how many page views your current videos on YouTube have amassed

    • 2

Check your email for confirmation from YouTube on the success of your application. This can take up to two months to process.

    • 3

Configure your video settings in your YouTube account once you have Partner confirmation from YouTube. This includes "Claiming' and "Enabling" your target video for the Rental Partner Beta program.

    • 4

Set a fixed price for a video, as of May 2010 between 99 cents and $19.99. Gauge the competition in the YouTube Store before choosing a price level.

    • 5

Select the time frame a viewer is allowed to rent out your video. As a guideline, most videos headlining the front page of the YouTube Store are available for only 24 hours. However, you can increase this to 1 week if you wish to offer your users more flexibility and generate more purchases.

    • 6

Access site statistics to determine how your video is performing.

    • 7

Monitor your revenue from your rental videos, which will be paid as revenue share. You will not be charged Google Checkout Merchant transaction fees.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the YouTube Promoted Videos Program to increase the audience for your existing content. The program is built on the AdWords auction system and allows you to bid for keywords and set up daily budgets. Your promoted video ad will appear next to targeted keywords and help you increase traffic to your video content.

  • Monitor trends and fine-tune content in your next video to maximize appeal to your audience. Since YouTube is the third-largest Internet destination in the world, careful analysis of top performing keywords and referrals will help you pinpoint ways to siphon off more traffic to your video-for-rent.

  • This program is currently only available to residents of the United States.

  • Ensure sure your videos are completely your own and do not violate any copyrights. Otherwise, they will be immediately deleted.
