Create a word list that you want to use for the history word puzzle you plan to create. This word list should have important vocabulary from your unit. To make a word puzzle easier, you can give students the master list. To make it more difficult, they can use their textbooks or notes to find possible words that might be in the word puzzle. You have more control over the difficulty and purpose of the word puzzles when you make them yourself.

Use a word processing program to make your own fourth grade history word puzzles. The easiest types to do on a word processing program are search-a-word, unscramble the word and cryptogram. For example, to make an unscramble word puzzle on Microsoft Word, you would title the puzzle and then number each word and type the letters out of order. Then create a blank for students write each word correctly after they unscramble it.

Use a reproducible book full of history word puzzles for fourth graders, such as "Presidential Word Search Puzzles" by John Chaneski (see Resources). This particular book has many puzzles about United States history because it starts with George Washington and continues with a puzzle about Barack Obama. You may also find some puzzle books that will contain different subjects, including math, reading and social studies. You can purchase fourth grade word puzzle books online or at teachers' stores.
