The blower motor in a 1998 Cadillac is essential for cabin comfort. It is used to maintain the temperature by blowing air across the air-conditioning evaporator coil to cool the air, or across the heater core to heat the air. It is also essential in defrosting the windows on cold days. When the blower motor stops working, a new one will need to be installed. Following a few steps and using some basic hand tools, it can be replaced at home.

Instructions

  1. Removal

    • 1

Open the hood of the vehicle and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal with a wrench.

    • 2

Remove the strut tower that crosses the engine compartment using a socket set. It connects to the top of each strut tower.

    • 3

Label the spark-plug wires that attach to the coil packs at the rear of the engine. Remove the cables from the coil packs by carefully pulling on the boot. Labeling the wires will ensure the wires are reconnected properly.

    • 4

Disconnect the electrical connector going to the blower motor.

    • 5

With the socket wrench, remove the three bolts on the back of the blower that hold the backing plate on and remove the plate.

    • 6

Remove the five bolts on the back of the blower motor housing perimeter with a socket wrench and carefully pull out the blower motor.

    Installation

    • 7

Remove the three bolts from the new motor backing plate using a socket wrench. This will allow the pieces of the new motor assembly to move around so that it can be inserted into the blower-motor housing with ease.

    • 8

Carefully place the new blower motor into the housing on the firewall and insert and tighten the three bolts previously removed from the backing plate.

    • 9

Insert and tighten the five bolts to the motor plate perimeter. This will secure the blower to its housing.

    • 10

Plug the electrical connector back into the blower motor.

    • 11

Reinstall the coil packs. Connect the spark-plug wires to their respective coils.

    • 12

      Reinstall the strut brace.

    • 13

Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Test operation of the blower motor by turning the fan on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Now is a good time to replace the spark plugs if they are nearing the end of their service life, since the strut brace and coil packs are out of the way giving easy access to the rear spark plugs.

  • Carefully handle the new blower motor to prevent distortion which could cause vibration during operation.
