Apple's iTunes media player makes sorting your tunes easy.

There are two basic ways to sort your tunes with iTunes 8.0.1: by name and using a playlist. Sorting by name orders your tunes alphabetically by song, artist, album, genre or other characteristic. This makes no permanent changes to your iTunes Library, but can be recreated with one mouse click. Sorting using a playlist gives a bit more control, allowing the user to sort songs, artists or albums in any order and to save that order for later.

Instructions

  1. Sort By Name

    • 1

      Open iTunes.

    • 2

Find the bar along the top of the main window that says "Name," "Artist," "Album," etc. Scroll to the right to see all the different labels.

    • 3

Right-click on the bar if you wish to make another label visible. Click the label to show it in the top bar. For instance, classical music buffs might want to show "Composer." DJs might want to show "Beats Per Minute."

    • 4

Click any label along the top bar to sort your tunes alphabetically (or numerically, for some labels) by that label. For instance, clicking "Album" will sort your songs alphabetically by album name. Click "Play Count" will sort your songs by how many times they have been played.

    Sort Using a Playlist

    • 5

      Open iTunes.

    • 6

Select "New Playlist" from the "File" menu. Type in a name for the playlist.

    • 7

Return to the main window by clicking "Music" under "Library" in the upper left-hand corner.

    • 8

Select the tunes you wish to sort. Hold down "Shift" or "Ctrl" as you click to select more than one song.

    • 9

Drag the songs onto the icon of the playlist you just created.

    • 10

Return to the playlist by clicking on the playlist name in the left-hand window.

    • 11

Drag the songs up and down the list to sort them in any order you desire. This ordered playlist will be automatically saved when you quit.
