Instructions for Applying Grommets
It is simple to apply grommets to any weight of fabric, from a soft knit up to drapery-weight linen. The process is always the same and involves either a grommet kit, or a sturdy hammer and a solid work table upon which to lay the fabric.

1
Determine where you will place grommets on your project. Use the measuring tape to ensure that they are placed evenly. Mark the fabric with dressmaker's chalk.
-
2
Decide what size grommet you need to complete your job. They range from tiny eyelet grommets that are suitable for lacing, up to large, industrial-size grommets that work well with drapery fabric or even on shower curtains.

Use a circle of iron-on interfacing cut slightly larger than the grommet base when applying them to delicate fabrics to give the grommet more substantial fabric to which to connect. Apply it to the backside of the fabric over which the grommet will be placed. This keeps delicate fabric from shredding.

Follow package instructions when applying grommets. There are kits available if you intend to do a great many grommets, but it is just as easy to use a hammer to cap a grommet. Begin with a scrap of fabric so you can get the feel of working with either the tools or a hammer. Lay the fabric on a sturdy work table. Mark the spot where the grommet will attach. Cut a small hole on the mark according to package instructions.

5
Place the shank half of the grommet on the back side of the fabric. The other side goes on the top side of the fabric directly over the shank grommet. Strike the grommet smartly with a hammer. The teeth bite through the fabric and crimp under the edge of the grommet where it becomes secure. Snip any extra fabric away from the hole. After one or two practice placements, you are ready to attach as many grommets as you wish.

Tips & Warnings
You may purchase grommet tape that is suitable for draperies. It is a stiff tape with evenly spaced grommets attached and perfectly spaced. The tape goes on the back of the drapery header and the front of the grommet is applied according to package directions.
If you don't have a rubber mallet, use a padding of fabric over the grommet and strike it with a regular hammer. Without padding, the metal of the hammer will mar the grommet.
