Although the Linksys WRT54-TM is branded as a T-Mobile product, there's nothing stopping you from using it in your home network. At its core, the WRT54-TM is really just a very common WRT54G 4 port, 802.11g wireless router. It can be configured to run on anyone's home network, regardless of whether or not they are a T-Mobile customer. Fortunately, the WRT54G-TM has setup features that allow you to get your wireless network up and running very quickly.

  • Appropriate Ethernet cabling

Instructions

  1. Wired Setup

    • 1

      Disconnect your broadband modem from your computer as well as its power supply. Save your work and shut down your PC.

      Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the rear of the router.

      Connect another length of Ethernet cable to the network interface card (NIC) on your desktop or laptop computer.

      Plug in the modem's power supply and wait a few minutes until the indicator lights on the front of the modem are properly lit.

      Plug in the router's power supply and boot up your computer. Launch your web browser to verify Internet access.

    Wireless Setup

      Launch your web browser after you've finished the wired setup. Point your browser to "192.168.1.1" (without quotes).

      Login using the username "admin." Leave the password field blank.

      Click the "Wireless Network" tab. Configure your wireless settings appropriately. Change your network's SSID to something you can easily remember.

      Set a security level of at least WPA, if not WPA2-TPIK. Set your password as something difficult for others to guess, but easy for you to remember.

      Click "Save Settings" and allow your router to reboot.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're using your router for wireless access, try and position your router at the center of your room or house to guarantee the best coverage.
