Update car insurance information with PennDOT.

PennDOT (short for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) requires you to maintain updated car insurance to operate a vehicle in Pennsylvania. If your car insurance company changes, you need to let PennDOT know. PennDOT offers both offline and online services to help you keep your information updated.

Instructions

  1. Online

    • 1

Renew your car registration online upon its expiration to update your car insurance information. Visit PennDOT's "Online Vehicle Services" page to do this (see Resources).

    • 2

Type in the first eight digits of your title number and your car's license plate number to log in. Select the "Renew Vehicle Registration" option.

    • 3

Enter the new insurance company name, policy number, effective date and expiration date of your coverage in the online form. Certify that this information is correct and press "Continue" to register your vehicle. You'll receive a confirmation message and temporary registration card immediately. PennDOT will now have an update of your new insurance information.

    Offline

    • 4

Visit a PennDOT office or approved PennDOT messenger service with your new insurance card in hand (see Resources). Use this option to update insurance information if it's not time to renew your registration (i.e., if it's more than a month) or if you've had issues with your car insurance in the past, such as a lapse in coverage.

    • 5

Inform the PennDOT representative that you've changed car insurance and you want to update your insurance information. Show your insurance card as proof that your insurance is valid.

    • 6

Send back your registration through the mail as another offline alternative. PennDOT sends you this form (MV-105) preprinted with your vehicle information every year before your registration renewal date. Write in the company name, policy number, effective date and expiration date. Enclose your registration fee and wait for PennDOT to receive your form. You'll know that the department has your updated information when you receive your new registration card and sticker in the mail.
