Homeschooling is legal in the state of Kentucky. According to Kentucky law, homeschooling families fall into the same category as non-profit schools and must follow the same laws that apply to those schools. It is important for families wishing to homeschool in Kentucky to find a local homeschool support group. These groups will be able to provide support and help answer any questions you might have about starting to homeschool.

Instructions

    • 1

      Notify the superintendent of your intent to homeschool. This notification must include the names, ages and places of residence of all children who will be schooled in your homsechool.

      Teach required subjects. The required subjects are those that the public school system teaches and includes reading, writing, spelling, grammar, history, mathematics and civics. You can use any curriculum you choose.

      Have school for 185 days. Out of those days, 177 must be instructional days.

    • 4

      Maintain attendance and academic records. These need to be made available upon request by the board of education, but can be kept on paper or on a computer.
