Gun dog training can be an enjoyable experience, if you have a good attitude, the correct technique and the right breed. There are many gun dog breeds you can choose from, these include pointers, curs, terriers, labrador retrievers, basset hounds, dachshunds, beagles and bloodhounds. Begin gun dog training with a puppy that is at least 8 weeks old. There is no need to train a gun dog with cruel techniques. Dogs instinctively want to please their owners. 1. Decide what sex and breed of gun dog you would like to purchase. Purchase a 7 week old puppy.

2. Take your puppy to the veterinarian for a checkup and obtain all the necessary vaccinations. Inform the veterinarian of your plans to train your puppy as a gun dog, and select a proper diet for him.

3. Start training your puppy as early as 8 weeks of age. Get the puppy acquainted with the outdoors; simulate the environment and climate that you will be working in. Frequently exercise your puppy, maintain a healthy diet and always provide him with plenty of fresh water. During hot days, or when you suspect the climate could cause the puppy to become susceptible to dehydration, try giving him Smart Water, it contains electrolytes, which maintains hydration. During times of excessive heat, place a cold damp handkerchief around his neck, use a spray bottle filled with cold water and spray him with it.

4. Start by teaching your puppy basic commands, sit, down, stay, drop it and come. Praise him and give him a treat each time he complies with your command. Obedience is critical. Have patience and always treat the puppy with love and respect. Discipline him when needed. Once he has learned basic commands, practice these commands from a distance. Gradually increase your distance as you practice, and use a whistle to gain the dogs attention.

5. When teaching the retrieve method, use a stuffed bird (toy), rub the feather of a real bird all over the stuffed toy, so that it retains the scent of a real bird. Practice throwing the stuffed bird up into the air, and have the puppy catch it and bring it to you.

6. Teach the puppy to track the scent of blood, by leaving a trail of real bird blood. At the end of the blood trail, leave a treat. Your puppy will learn how to track this scent.

7. Practice shooting. Choose a location where it is legal to shoot, and where few people are around. Bring someone with you. Let the other person shoot the gun into the air. Comfort your puppy if she is frightened. Once the puppy becomes comfortable with the sound of gun fire, you can start practicing hunting game with her. Have the puppy fetch your game after you shoot it, and bring it to you. Always praise your puppy and give her a treat, when she is obeying your commands.

• Be careful when practicing shooting, always have someone with you. One person should always be with the dog, while the other person is shooting.
