1
Choose a plain hat in a color that complements your Derby dress. For instance, select a color that matches your dress, a color featured in your dress or a neutral color, such as white or black. Match the color of your hat to the color of your purse and shoes. Choose a hat size that complements either your dress or the shape of your face. Hats range in size from large, sombrero-sized hats to small hats with tiny brims.
-
2
Select decorative accents that include the colors in your dress or that complement a solid-colored dress. Add such accents as feathers, a large silk flower, ribbon, lace, buttons, decorative pins and sequins.

3
Experiment with the placement of your decorative elements before you start assembling and attaching pieces. Attaching and removing the pieces again and again may damage your hat, so have your final design chosen before you begin attaching items.
-
4
Cut a section of ribbon or lace to attach above the brim of your hat. Glue the piece into place with a hot glue gun. Set the fabric's seam on the side of the hat where you plan to attach your decorative accents.
-
5
Glue feathers to the ribbon or lace seam. Arrange the feathers in a jaunty style. Cover the base of the feathers with a large flower.
-
6
Use such embellishments as a bow, buttons, sequins or pins to cover the stems of flowers or feathers.
