How to Check on a State Tax Refund in North Carolina When You Used Electronic Filing
When you file your state income tax return in North Carolina, you may find yourself anxiously expecting your refund deposit. The North Carolina Department of Revenue provides multiple alternatives for electronic filers to check the status of their personal income tax returns. When you electronically file, your return status should be available within seven days of filing. Monitoring the status of your return makes you aware any time there is a delay in processing and alerts you as soon as your deposit is scheduled.

Navigate to the "Where's My Refund" page provided by the North Carolina Department of Revenue (see Resources).

Click the radio button beside the option to check the status of your current year tax refund. Click the "Next" button.

Enter your Social Security number in the provided input field. If the return is a joint return, enter the Social Security number listed first on the return.

Input the amount of your expected refund in the next input field. Enter the dollar figure in whole dollars. This is the amount listed on line 31 of your return. Click the "Submit" button.

Close your browser window for your own security after retrieving the status information.

Call the North Carolina Department of Revenue number for the automated refund information line at 877-252-4052.

Input your Social Security number when prompted. If you filed a joint return, enter the Social Security number listed first on the return.

Enter the amount of your anticipated refund as it appears on line 31 of your state tax return form. Enter the amount in whole dollars.

Hang up the phone once you have received the status information. This protects your privacy and the security of your personal information.
