How to Photoshop Fur

How to Photoshop Fur thumbnail
Create fur using Photoshop.

Illustrations are used for many purposes, from ads and signs to web pages and children's books. Many people like to use Photoshop as their primary computer-based illustration tool. This is in part because Photoshop has a wide array of tools and functions to aid the illustrator, such as the layers panel. One use for these tools is in creating fur for a character or an object in a drawing.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Select "File" from the menu and click "Open." Browse to an illustration you want to add fur to and open it.

    • 2

Select "Image" from the menu and click "Image Size." In the dialog box that pops up, double or triple (depending on how small your image is) the width and height numbers. Click "OK."

    • 3

Click on the "New Layer" icon under the "Layers" panel. Select the "Pencil" tool from the toolbar. Choose a hard brush and set the width to 1.

    • 4

Select an area where you want to draw a clump of fur. Draw in strands of fur on the canvas, placing them at slightly different angles so that the fur doesn't look too uniform.

    • 5

Right click on the layer in the "Layers" panel and select "Duplicate." In the dialog that pops up, click "OK." Use the "Move" tool to slightly offset this layer from the one below it.

    • 6

Repeat step 5 to further thicken the fur.

    • 7

Repeat steps 3-6 to create other clumps of fur elsewhere on your illustration. Select "File" and click "Save."
