Instructions

    • 1

Collect and write down the measurements for the skirt length and waist waistline waistline of the skirt. Construct an approximate measurement of the hemline of the skirt. These measurements will be guidelines for the patchwork skirt.

    • 2

Decide how large the patchwork pieces will be. Using smaller pieces will make it more detailed, while larger pieces will take less time to complete.

    • 3

Cut the chosen denim into pieces that are the same height, but not necessarily the same width. It becomes easier to sew when the pieces are the same height. Choose the shades of denim that will be most apparent in the patchwork by making these pieces wider than others. Collect the pieces of denim and lay them out in the preferred pattern.

    • 4

Sew the denim pieces together. Start with two pieces. To sew them together correctly, place two pieces of denim on top of each other with the right side facing inward. Use pins to keep the denim in place, while sewing. Sew all of the pieces together in one line, so all of the pieces create a strip with one height. Repeat this step with all of the pieces, creating many strips. In the end, sew the lines together to make a larger piece of denim patchwork.

    • 5

Wrap the denim patchwork around the waist with the wrong side facing out and use several pins to mark the point where the skirt will be sewn together at the waistline.

    • 6

Remove the fabric from the body and lay it down on a flat surface. Complete the pinning process down the side.

    • 7

Sew the seam along with pin line just created. Use an iron to press the seam down before turning the skirt right side out.

    • 8

Fold the denim inward at the waistline. This fold should be approximately 1/4-inch and should be pressed with an iron. Fold the same seam inward again, this time 1 inch, and sew it down. This will be the casing for a drawstring.

    • 9

Make two small cuts in the middle of the waistland. The cuts should be between 2 to 5 cm apart, depending on the preference. This is where the drawstring will go through to support the skirt. Install the eyelets prior to pulling the drawstring through. Use a safety pin, if necessary, to pull through the drawstring. Tie knots on each end of the drawstring when done.

    • 10

Try on the skirt and tighten the drawstring to make sure it fits properly. Decide on the length and hem the bottom.
