How to Repair a Fiberglass Fishing Rod

How to Repair a Fiberglass Fishing Rod thumbnail
A quick rod repair in the field can save a fishing trip.

The sun rises over the mountain as you take your last sip of coffee from the time-worn Thermos and make your first cast of the day. The lure splashes into the water and you start to reel. A lunker grabs the lure and wakes you into action, but then your rod snaps, the line breaks and your fish is gone. Is your trip ruined? Not if your well-stocked tackle box contains a rod-and-reel repair kit. A few extra parts can save the day.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose, splintered sections of the rod by hand while being careful not to get smaller fragments lodged in your skin. Mix your epoxy resin and hardening agent together and apply the mixture to both of the broken ends of the rod. Slide the sections of the fishing rod together and hold them in place for 2 minutes while the epoxy begins to set. Place the rod on a flat surface and allow the epoxy to cure for 5 more minutes.

    • 2

Mix your fiberglass resin with its hardening agent. Apply a thick coat of the fiberglass to the break in the rod using the artist's brush. Allow the fiberglass to harden for 10 minutes.

Smooth the repair by rubbing sand paper up and down the length of the rod across the repair. Wipe away the dust and debris from the rod with a clean cloth. Restring your rod with fishing line from the reel, tie on a new lure or hook and go fishing.
