The radiator hoses allow coolant to flow from the engine to the radiator

Your car's radiator hoses are important. They should be inspected frequently and replaced when they show signs of age because a damaged hose can cause the loss of your engine coolant and leave you stranded. The only correct permanent repair of a damaged radiator hose is to replace it with a new one. However, sometimes that may not be possible because the parts store isn't open or doesn't have it in stock. In that case, a temporary fix may be neede.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside diameter of the damaged radiator hose.

    • 2

Purchase a tailpipe adapter with an outside diameter the same as the inside diameter of the hose. Buy two hose clamps to fit the outside of the radiator hose also.

    • 3

Cut the radiator hose off completely at the damaged area using a sharp knife. If possible, cut it twice to remove the damaged area entirely.

    • 4

Insert the tailpipe adapter in the cut ends of the radiator hose to join it back together.

    • 5

Install the hose clamps to secure the radiator hose to the tailpipe adapter and tighten well using a screwdriver.

    • 6

Refill the engine with a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water when the engine has cooled. Run the engine to test for leaks. Refill the radiator as necessary to maintain the proper level of coolant.

    • 7

Replace the repaired hose with a new one as soon as possible.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tailpipe adapter used in this repair is not designed to be submerged in water constantly and will rust. Do not use this as a permanent repair for a leaking radiator hose.
