How to Install Cellulose Insulation Around Recessed Lighting

To properly install cellulose insulation around recessed lights, you must first determine whether the lights are rated for contact with insulation (I.C. rated). All I.C. rated fixtures are stamped "type I.C."; in the absence of this stamp, you must assume the fixtures are not rated for direct contact with insulation. Fixtures that are not I.C. rated must be covered with a recessed fixture cover before adding insulation; these covers are available at insulation supply stores.

Things You'll Need

• Dust mask
• Loose-fill cellulose insulation
• Recessed fixture covers
• Staple gun and staples, or duct tape, or urethane foam sealant

Instructions

1. Determine if your fixtures are I.C. rated. Look for a stamp that reads "type I.C." The stamp may be on the top of the fixture or inside the housing. If the fixtures have an I.C. rating, skip to step 3. If the fixtures aren't I.C. rated, you must install recessed fixture covers.

2. Working from the attic, cover the fixture with a recessed fixture cover. These covers are basically a box made of fire-retardant cardboard and are open on one end. Set the cover over the fixture, making sure the cover is at least 3 inches from the fixture in all directions. The cover may be stapled in place, taped in place or glued in place using urethane foam.

3. Pour or blow loose-fill cellulose insulation over and around the covered fixtures. If you are just insulating a few recessed lights, you can simply pour insulation over and around the fixtures. If you are insulating the entire attic, consider renting a blower to spread the insulation. In either case, you want a mound of insulation over each fixture.

Tips & Warnings

• Recessed light covers look like typical cardboard boxes, but they aren't. Recessed light covers are treated with a fire retardant. Do not substitute a cardboard box for a recessed light cover.

• Wear a dust mask when installing cellulose insulation.
