How to Use the SmartBoard to Teach Fifth Grade Algebra Skills
The SmartBoard is a presentation system consisting of a computer with Smart software, a digital projector, and a SmartBoard. The SmartBoard adds an interactive element for students learning basic algebra concepts in the fifth grade. A typical fifth grade mathematics curriculum would include using the properties of equality to solve problems and constructing simple graphs like time-series graphs, which show how a quantity changes over time.
Instructions
-
Time-Series Graph
-
1
Collect data for the graph. The data should represent something that changes over time. This could be the children's heights over the course of the school year, seeds that the students have planted or some other time-related variable. For maximum engagement and interactivity, this should be data that the students collect themselves.
-
2
Open a graphing program on your computer that is compatible with the SmartBoard. For example, open up Microsoft Excel.
-
-
3
Enter the data from step 1 into the graph and graph the time series.
-
4
Open a Smart Notebook on the computer by clicking the "Smart Notebook: icon. Arrange the graphing program and Smart Notebook so that they appear side by side on the SmartBoard.
-
5
Ask the students to make predictions about the data. For example, is it possible for students' heights to continue growing indefinitely? Record the students' responses in the Notebook by drawing on the computer screen with the Smart Pen.

Tips & Warnings
Use the Smart Notebook to discuss inequality symbols like greater than and less than. For example, which children's heights are greater than the average? Which are less?
