How to Buy a Used Excavator
An excavating machine can save you time and money--after the initial investment. Digging, moving stones or trees, or removing stumps can be done far more efficiently and inexpensively than trying to do it by hand. According to Buyer Zone, excavators "are built to deliver 8,000 to 10,000 hours of operation before any major components need replacing." With a few tips, you can buy a used excavator and get to work.

1
Contact an equipment locator company such as ELS. These companies can find equipment that suits your needs from around the globe. You can also contact equipment rental companies in your area.
-
2
Inspect the excavator. One of the first considerations is the tail spin, or the amount of room the cab needs when it turns. If you're using the excavator in rather small spaces, then an excavator that requires lots of room to maneuver would not be practical for your company. Look elsewhere until you find a suitable machine.

3
Test the controls for ease of use. If you aren't going to be operating the excavator, make sure to bring along your operator. If the controls are difficult to use, then pass on the excavator. You want your operator to be able to use the machine easily and safely.
-
4
Find out how to access the hydraulic system and the engine. Excavators require some maintenance and if you can't easily access important areas, consider looking at another machine. Also check the maintenance records for the excavator.
-
5
Look for depth monitors. They make it much easier for you to dig accurately and efficiently and save money.
