How to Clean a Norelco Coffee Maker With Vinegar

How to Clean a Norelco Coffee Maker With Vinegar thumbnail
Fresh tasting coffee requires regular coffee maker cleaning.

Cleaning a well used Norelco coffee maker thoroughly with vinegar will make the appliance work better and the coffee taste fresher. Residual oils from coffee beans get deposited on the metal and plastic surfaces of a coffee maker. Vinegar strips the coffee oils and cleans the interior surfaces of the coffee maker as it is flushed through the system. Multiple vinegar treatments may be necessary to fully clean a Norelco coffee maker with a high level of build up. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1 or 2 gal distilled white vinegar
  • Paper towel
  • Running water

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a paper towel in half three times and pour a few drops of distilled vinegar on it to saturate about half. Wipe down all the exterior surfaces of the cold Norelco coffee maker with the vinegar soaked paper towel.

    • 2

Lift the door to access the Norelco coffee maker's empty water reservoir and fill it to its maximum cup capacity with distilled white vinegar. Many Norelco coffee makers have clear viewing windows that allow you to monitor the level of liquid in the reservoir as it is filled.

    • 3

Remove any paper coffee filter or used coffee grounds that may be in the brew basket and slide the carafe into position below. Leave wire mesh coffee filters in the brew basket to be flushed with the hot vinegar.

    • 4

Turn on the machine to start the brewing process and wait 5 to 7 minutes for it to complete before refilling the reservoir with a second load of distilled vinegar.

    • 5

Allow the vinegar to soak in the reservoir and carafe for 30 minutes before dumping the contents of the carafe into the sink and sliding it back into position below the brew basket. You will notice that the vinegar has turned dark gray or almost black with residue from the inside of the coffee maker.

    • 6

Set the Norelco coffee maker for another brew and refill the reservoir a third time once the second brew cycle has completed. Dump the carafe and replace it before proceeding with the third brew cycle.

    • 7

Spill the contents of the carafe into the sink after the third hot vinegar flush and rinse it before filling it with cool water.

    • 8

Pour the cool water from the carafe into the water reservoir on the Norelco coffee maker and run a brew cycle to flush out and dilute the vinegar. A second clean water flush can be done, but is not necessary.

    • 9

Empty the carafe into the sink and put it back into the coffee maker before brewing coffee with the machine again as normal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Vinegar also washes the surface of the tongue to cleanse the palette and can make coffee taste better. Try taking a small bite of a dill pickle, chewing and swallowing before taking a sip of coffee.
