How to Set Up a USB Port for a Cable Modem
Cable modems are among the most widely used methods for high-speed Internet access. The cable modem must be physically connected to the computer and to a network in order to be able to access the Internet. Many cable modems support connection through a USB Interface utilizing an available USB port on the computer or through a USB switch. Connecting the cable modem to a USB port can be done with little time and effort even if you have a limited knowledge of cable modem connectivity.

- USB cable
- Coaxial cable connection
- Coaxial cable splitter (optional)
- USB port switch (optional)
- Cable modem installation CD

Cable modems use coaxial cable connections. Plug a length of coaxial cable into the coaxial cable port on the modem and to the coaxial wall jack or cable splitter

USB connections may be color coded for easy connection. Insert the USB cable into the USB port on the back of the modem. In many cases, the USB port on the back of the modem is the same color as the USB cable, such as blue, black or white, to allow for no mistakes during the connection process

USB devices can be plugged into a USB hub. Plug the end of the USB cable into a USB port on the back or front of the computer. If you don't have a USB port available, you will need to purchase a USB switch from a computer supply store.

Cable modems use AC adapters for power. Plug the power supply into the back of the modem and into an AC wall outlet or power strip. The power light should display the appropriate color on the modem.

Cable modem installation software is available on CD. Insert the Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer. Select the USB connection option when prompted. Follow the onscreen prompts to set up the Internet connection software. Reboot the computer if you are prompted to do so after installation has completed.

Open a web browser and attempt to navigate to a web page. If you're unable to browse to any web pages, check that the USB cable is securely connected and that the Internet software is correctly installed.
