      Choose your decorative paper.

Choose your decorative paper. You will want to choose paper that is thick enough to cover any printing on your generic matchbooks but still thin enough to fold easily. You can use your computer to print images for your matchbooks, purchase decorative paper or recycle paper from magazines. A solid color is a good choice if you want to add more decorative elements later.

      Measure your matchbook.
      Measure your matchbook.

Measure your matchbook. Open the matchbook and smooth the cover flat. Stretch the measuring tape from the top of the matchbook cover around the back of the matchbook to the end of the front flap. This will be the length of your custom matchbook. Now measure the width of the matchbook cover.

Use your template to cut a cover for your matchbook. Place the template on your paper. You can place the template at the upper corner of your solid color paper. If you are using paper with images, place your template to fit your design. Now trace around your template and cut out your cover.

Attach your cover. Spread a thin coat of glue across the front and back of the cover and across the front flap of your generic matchbook. Now, carefully press your paper over the cover. Make sure that the edges are even and that there are no wrinkles. Let your cover dry for at least one hour.

Personalize your cover. Use colored felt pens to decorate your matchbook or use glue to attach small decorative items like sequins or small beads. The front flap of your matchbook is a great spot for a personalized message to the lucky recipient of your custom made matchbook.
