How to Make Number Flash Cards for Preschoolers
According to Cathy Malley, an educator with the National Network for Child Care, preschoolers learn "by experiencing and by doing." One easy and effective way to help preschoolers learn numbers is to make and use flash cards. Rather than spending money on flash cards, parents can make their own inexpensive number flash cards at home. Preschoolers can even help make the cards, turning them into active participants who are learning by both "experiencing" and "doing."

Having children write the numbers helps them learn those numbers. Ask your child to write "1" on one side of an index card, then turn the card over and have her put one sticker on the other side.

Take another index card and ask your child to write "2" on one side. Turn the card over and have him put two stickers on the other side. Continue this process until you have number flash cards for as many numbers as you'd like.

Hold up a flash card so your child can see the sticker side and ask her to tell you how many items she sees. For example, if there are five cat stickers on the card, she would say, "Five." Turn the flash card over to show her the correct answer, "5."

Wrap a rubber band around your flash cards when you put them away so they won't get lost or separated.

Tips & Warnings
Take your child with you to purchase the supplies, and ask him to pick out index cards, stickers and colored markers that he likes.
You can make flash cards using this method for just about anything you want to teach your child. For example, you could put a sticker of an apple on the front of an index card and write the letter "A" on the back to help teach your child letters.
To better preserve your flash cards, use contact paper to laminate them or take them to a local printer to have them laminated.
