How Do I Open My Registry Editor in Windows XP?

Open the Registry Editor two different ways in Windows XP.

Included in all versions of Microsoft Windows since the 3.1 release, the Windows Registry is a database containing thousands of settings related to the operating system's kernel, drivers, installed programs and services, and the user interface. Changes are most commonly made to the Registry using the Windows Registry Editor utility. Access this utility in Windows XP by using the "Run" command or by opening it in Windows Explorer.

Instructions

Using the "Run" Command

1. Click the Windows "Start" button.

2. Select "Run."

3. Type "regedit," without the quotation marks.

4. Click "OK" to open the Registry Editor.

Using Windows Explorer

1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.

2. Double-click the icon representing the C drive.

3. Double-click the "Windows" folder.

4. Double-click the icon labeled "regedit" to open the Registry Editor.
