The power save mode on your computer helps you save energy, especially on a laptop, by dimming the backlight of your monitor, putting your computer to sleep after some time of inactivity and turning off your monitor after some time of inactivity. However, the power save mode is sometimes inconvenient, such as when you are trying to download a big file. To avoid the inconveniences of your computer's power save mode, you'll have to turn the power save mode off.

      Right-click on you computer's desktop. If you have any programs you are working with, minimize those programs either by clicking on the "Restore Down" button on the top right corner of the program or by clicking on the "Show Desktop" button on the left side of the tool bar.

      Select "Properties" from the menu that appears if you have Windows XP. Then click on the "Screen Saver" tab at the top of the pop-up which appears. If you have Windows Vista, select "Personalize" from the menu that appears and then click "Screen Saver."

      Click on the "Power..." button on Windows XP or "Change power settings" on Windows Vista. Then select one of the power schemes from the drop down menu on Windows XP or power plans on Windows Vista. The "Minimal Power Management" scheme is best on Windows XP. On Windows Vista, the "High Performance" power plan is best.
