How to Change the Presser Foot on a Singer Serger

When you need to work with a different stitch on your Singer serger, also known as an overlock machine, you may have to change the presser foot. You can do so with a few actions on the serger's throat plate. The throat plate, located just beneath the presser foot and the presser shank, provides a stable working surface for the task.

Instructions

1. Unplug or turn off your machine to avoid accidental movement of the needle when you are changing the presser foot.

2.

   Lift the presser foot handle and raise the presser foot to its highest position.

3. 

   Needle position is important.

   Turn the hand wheel and raise the needle to its highest position.

4. 

   Presser foot over metal throat plate

   Press the release button, located on the rear of the presser foot. Gently pull out the presser foot while holding the release button.

5. Put the selected new presser foot under the presser foot shank and lower the shank by moving the presser foot handle downward. Align the shank slot with the hinge pin of the presser foot. Lower the shank onto the hinge pin until the shank snaps onto the pin.

6. Raise the presser shank and tug on the presser foot. The presser foot should be tightly secured; you should not be able to pull it from the shank.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are not able to press the foot into place on the throat plate of the machine, try pressing up on the shank with the presser foot in your fingers.
