How to Find the IP Address of a Remote Machine

How to Find the IP Address of a Remote Machine thumbnail
IP addresses are numbers on a network specific to the machines on the network.

An IP address provides a machine with its own "address" on a network. The IP address is a digital number that is separated by periods. For instance, the address "192.168.0.2" is an example of an IP address on a computer network. You can obtain the IP address of a remote computer on your network or a domain server on the Internet using the machine's name. The "ping" command sends a small packet to the machine and returns the computer's IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the Windows "Start" button, and select "Run." In the text box that displays, enter "cmd" (without the quotation marks), and press on the "OK" button. This opens your Windows command shell.

    • 2

Type "ping <machine_name>" (without the quotation marks) into the command shell, and press on the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Replace "<machine_name>" with the name of the computer on your network. You can also ping a domain name website. For instance, use "ping www.your_domain.com" to find the IP address for a website.

    • 3

View the results displayed in the command shell. The first line returned shows the remote computer's IP address. The result looks like the below:

      PING your_domain.com (255.208.151.31) 56(84) bytes of data.

In this example, "255.208.151.31" is the IP address of the remote machine.
