How to Install a Truck Tool Box

How to Install a Truck Tool Box thumbnail
A truck tool box organizes and protects your hand tools.

Commonly constructed of aluminum, a truck tool box keeps your smaller implements and hardware organized and out of the sight of would-be-thieves. Truck tool boxes have a standard mounting system that utilizes a mounting bracket and J-bolts. This mounting system keeps the fastener contained within the truck tool box, adding additional security when the tool box is locked. Adding this security and organization to your truck requires only common hand tools and a few minutes.

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Tool Box Mounting Surface

    • 1

Cut the rubber mounting pad supplied with your truck tool box into two equal lengths with a utility knife. If the rubber mounting pad comes perforated, you only need to tear along the perforations to separate the rubber mounting pad.

    • 2

Place one rubber mounting pad on each of the truck's bed rails, near the location where you want to mount the truck tool box.

    • 3

Set the truck tool box on top of the rubber mounting pads. Make sure the mounting pads are centered under the mounting ledge of the tool box.

    • 4

Slide the tool box into location and center it between the bed rails.

Mounting Clip Truck Tool Box Installation

    • 5

Open the lid of the tool box and slide a mounting bracket under the tool box. Make sure the lip of the mounting bracket is resting under the lip of the truck's bed rail.

    • 6

Slide the mounting clip to align the holes of the mounting clip with the slotted holes located in the bottom of the truck tool box.

    • 7

Thread one hex bolt into each hole of the mounting bracket.

    • 8

Tighten each hex bolt with a 1/2-inch socket attached to a 3/8-inch drive ratchet handle to lock the truck tool box into place and complete the mounting clip installation.

    J-bolt Truck Tool Box Installation

    • 9

Open the lid of the tool box. Slide the threaded section of each J-bolt into the mounting holes of the tool box.

    • 10

Slide a washer over each end then loosely thread a head nut onto each J-bolt.

    • 11

Turn the J-bolts so the bottom of each J-bolt rests under the lip of the truck's bed rails.

    • 12

Tighten each hex nut with the 1/2-inch socket attached to the 3/8-inch drive ratchet. You will need to hold the J of each bolt under the bed rail of your truck with one hand while you tighten the hex nuts of the J-bolts. If the J-bolts shift, your truck tool box will not seat properly and could shift from the installed position while you are driving your truck.
