How to Fold a Flag Military Style
If you do not have an all-weather flag, it is supposed to be brought inside each night, folded and put on display until the next morning when it goes back up the flagpole. Flags that are not all-weather should also be brought in during inclement weather, and folded properly. There is an exact way to fold the flag, which is also how the flag is folded in the military. To fold a flag military style, you must have two people present to do the honors. Having two people to fold the flag will also ensure it never touches the ground.

Stand in place, and have your partner stand a flags-length distance in front of you. Hold the flag at waist height, with the corner of the star portion of the flag in your left hand.

Fold the flag horizontally, bringing the corner in your right hand to the corner in your left hand. Your partner will do the same, only it will be your mirror image.

Fold the flag horizontally once again, in the same fashion. This will create a quarter-fold in the flag. Turn the flag over in your and your partners hands so that the stars and stripes are both on top.

Fold the flag from the bottom, or striped portion of the flag. Your partner will be responsible for this portion of the folding. While holding each of the corners in the hands, fold the left corner up the length of the flag, so that the corner touches the fold. This will create a triangular shape in the bottom portion of the flag. Take the right corner point, and fold it up over the triangle you just made. Continue that folding pattern until you fold the entire length of the flag.

Take the open edge of the flag, and tuck it into the last fold you created with the triangle pattern.
