How to Display the Texas Flag

How to Display the Texas Flag thumbnail
This is the proper way to hang the Texas flag.

The Texas flag was first used as the national flag of the Republic of Texas in 1839. It was later adopted as the state flag when Texas joined the United States as the 38th state in 1845. The colors of the red, white and blue flag have meaning. Blue stands for loyalty, white for strength or purity and red represents bravery. Texans love the flag and display it indoors and outdoors at many locations around the state.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the flag for tears and wear. The flag should be in good condition to be flown.

    • 2

Do not display the state flag outdoors earlier than sunrise or later than sunset, unless it is properly illuminated during the night. Only a weatherproof flag can be displayed in inclement weather so it will not become damaged.

    • 3

Hoist the flag briskly. The white field is oriented at the top and the red field at the bottom for proper display. Display the flag on all state holidays and on specials dates of historical significance. Texas Flag Day is celebrated on March 2, Texas Independence Day.

    • 4

The flag should be displayed daily near the main administration building of every state-run institution.

    • 5

If the Texas state flag is displayed with the flag of the United States, the flags should be the same size, the flag poles should be the same height and the U.S. flag should be on the left from the viewpoint of the observer. The U.S. flag should be hoisted first, before the state flag, and lowered last, after the state flag has been lowered. Both flags should be flown at the same height. No flag other than the U.S. flag should be placed above or at the same level as the state flag (except other state flags, which should be flown at the same height).

    • 6

When lowering the Texas flag, do it ceremoniously. Do not let it touch the ground. Fold it for storage.

    • 7

The Texas flag should not be draped on a float, vehicle, train, boat or aircraft. If displayed on a vehicle, the staff should be affixed to the right front fender unless the U.S. flag is also to be displayed. In that case, fly the Texas flag on the left fender and the U.S. flag on the right fender.

    • 8

If flown with other flags and pennants representing municipalities, organizations or businesses, the Texas flag should be in the center of the grouping and taller than the other flags.

    • 9

When the flag is displayed from a horizontally mounted staff, the top of the flag should be at the peak of the pole.

    • 10

On a speaker’s platform, display the state flag above and behind the speaker for a flat display. If both the U.S. flag and Texas flag are displayed on the platform, the staff with the U.S. flag should be on the observer’s left and the Texas flag on the observer’s right.

Tips & Warnings

  • When flown at half-staff, raise the flag to the peak then lower it to half staff. When lowering it, raise it to the peak and then lower and remove it.

  • On Memorial Day, the Texas flag is displayed at half-staff until noon, then raised to the peak for the rest of the day.

  • The governor can issue an order to fly the Texas flag at half-staff in respect to an individual.

  • Fly the Texas flag upside down (red field oriented at the top) to signify extreme distress and emergency.
