Buying a dental plan helps alleviate the costs of dental work and in some offices, it is required. Some employers do not offer dental plans, so it's important to look at and compare privately offered plans and choose the one that best fits you.

1. All dental plans offer different benefits. It's important to take a look at the list of benefits each one provides and decide whether those benefits would be the right fit for you, or if you'd never take advantage of them.

2. Compare monthly premiums. Some dental plans have low monthly premiums, while other plans have significantly more expensive ones. Monthly premium price doesn't always equate to value, so be sure to look at what you're getting for the premium you're paying.

3. Look at the limits and exclusions. Some dental plans will not take you in if you have pre-existing dental issues. Other plans have limitations on what they will cover.
