How to Send Engagement Announcements

How to Send Engagement Announcements thumbnail
Follow proper protocal for engagement announcements.

One of the first things every engaged couple wants to do is tell everyone the good news. This is where engagement announcements come in. Engagement announcements simply announce the engagement and are never sent by the couple. Traditionally, the mother of the bride sends out the announcements. Local newspapers often publish engagement announcements as well, but the more formal way to announce an engagement is to mail friends and family announcements.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of all family and friends on the bride's side that you want to notify of the engagement. Then make a list of family and friends on the groom's side to whom you want to send announcements.

    • 2

Write down the full names of both the bride and the groom to ensure correct spelling of both. Additionally, determine the correct spelling for the mother and father of the groom as well as any title that should accompany either name, such as "Doctor."

    • 3

Ask the bride and groom when they plan to marry. Although you don't have to include a specific date on the card, it is nice to say something like: "The couple will marry in the fall." This gives the guests a general guideline for the nuptials.

    • 4

Print the announcement on thick, matte cardstock, similar to what you will use for the wedding invitation. Have the information professionally printed on the card or print the announcements at home if you have a high quality printer.

    • 5

Mail the announcements as soon as possible after the engagement occurs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Proper etiquette dictates that anyone who receives an engagement announcement should also receive a wedding invitation.

  • Do not send both an engagement announcement and a Save-the-Date card.

  • Many couples prefer to announce the engagement in the local newspaper rather than sending individual cards.
