How to Learn Chess Online
Chess is a two-player board game with a checkered board and 32 game pieces--16 per side. The pieces consist of two kings, two queens, four knights, four bishops, four castles and 16 pawns. The object of the game is to strategically maneuver your 16 chess pieces in a way that overcomes the other player's pieces so that you can eventually hold his King captive. You can learn to play the game online with a tutorial, a game server and live opponents.

Visit a website offering chess tutorials and online games. These include Chess.com, Chesscorner.com and Freechess.org. Some websites may require a registration.

Begin the tutorial. Chess tutorials usually explain the rules of the game, how each game piece moves and some strategies, at a minimum.

Practice. Chess websites usually also give players a chance to practice what they have learned. Free chess games pit the player against a server or against other players at the same level or higher.
