DIY Satellite Dish

DIY Satellite Dish thumbnail
Install your own satellite dish.

Most satellite television providers require professional satellite installation and setup. Some provide this service for free or at a nominal cost to ensure proper calibration and safety. In situations where no installer is available or the cost is too high, consumers may install the satellite dish themselves. Only attempt this project if you have the correct tools and experience with other do-it-yourself home maintenance projects.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Anchors and screws

  • Coaxial cable

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the best location for your satellite dish. Choose a high point on one of your outer walls or a corner of your roof that has a clear southern view of the sky. There should be no obstructions, such as trees or tall buildings.

    • 2

Mount your satellite dish on the outer wall or foundation by drilling holes, inserting anchors and securing the satellite base with screws. Clip or screw the arm into the base and secure your satellite dish to the arm. Ground the base of the mount and fill all remaining holes with caulk or sealant.

    • 3

Connect coaxial cable to the base of your satellite dish and run it to each room that will have a satellite TV receiver. Run the cables behind the drywall and under the floorboards to create a clean, professional look.

    • 4

Connect each receiver to the new coaxial cable. Connect the receivers to your television using standard composite or component audio/video cables, or HDMI cables, where available.

    • 5

Power on the receiver and find the satellite calibration settings in the on-screen guide. Follow the instructions to properly aim your dish and select the correct satellites to receive programming. You may want to have someone adjust the satellite as you monitor the signal strength.

    • 6

Call your satellite TV provider to activate the programming once the dish is positioned correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy more coaxial and audio/video cable than you think you will need so you will not be left short on account activation day.

  • Always wear a safety harness when working on tall ladders or rooftops.
