The first layer of contact cement should be allowed enough time to dry.

Plywood is inexpensive and useful for building many items. If you are not an experienced carpenter and are intimidated by using nails and a hammer or a drill and screws, plywood is a good choice for you. Plywood responds well to many adhesives, including contact cement, as long as it is used correctly. Without the correct preparation, you may find that your composite plywood absorbs a great deal of adhesive, which can be frustrating. But by following a few simple steps, you can ensure success in attaching your plywood to the item of your choice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a water-based contact cement. More caustic formulas may corrode composites such as plywood.

    • 2

Pour out the contact cement into a paint pan.

    • 3

Dip a paintbrush into the contact cement and apply a coat of medium thickness all over the area of plywood that requires adhesive.

    • 4

Allow the first coat of contact cement to dry for 20 to 30 minutes, creating a non-porous base.

    • 5

Paint a second application of contact cement onto the plywood. Allow the contact cement to become mostly dry to the touch. Attach the plywood as desired.
