How to Make Air Hardening Paper Clay
Creating clay projects can be very expensive. Not only do you have to purchase the clay, you must buy special tools, such as a kiln to dry and harden your piece, in order to finish a project. If you like to work with clay but find it too expensive, or if you are looking for a new clay medium, try paper clay. You can make paper clay in the comfort of your own home with items that you most likely already have on hand. Paper clay is also a great craft medium for children.
Things You'll Need
- Construction paper
- 4 1/2 cups water
- Blender
- Large bowl
- 1/2 cup flour
- Spoon
Instructions
-

1
Tear your construction paper into 1-inch squares (Use this as a guideline. You don't have to be precise). Use only one color at a time to keep the clay looking it's best.
-
2
Add 4 cups of water and 2 cups of torn construction paper directly into your blender. Blend until a pulp forms. If you do not have a blender, you can mix the water and paper with a spoon in a large bowl. It will take longer to mix by hand than with a mixer.

Tips & Warnings
It takes 24 to 48 hours for paper clay to air dry.
If you can't find construction paper, any type of paper (including toilet paper) will do. However, you may need less or more water depending on the type of paper. Add the water slowly when using different types of paper.
