How to Remove a Denial of Service Virus

A DOS virus may prevent you from accessing certain websites.

A Denial of Service (DOS) virus prevents computer users from accessing certain services on their operating systems, such as security websites. In addition, DOS viruses may slow your computer, delete your files, decrease your available memory, change your Internet and desktop settings, and cause your computer to freeze or to crash. Fortunately, such viruses can generally be removed if you take the right course of action.

Instructions

Disable System Restore

1. Click on the "Start" menu and then right-click on "Computer" and select "Properties." The System Properties window opens.

2. Click on the "System Protection" tab in the System Properties window.

3. Click on the "C: Drive" under "Available Drives" and then click on "Configure."

4. Check the box next to "Turn off system protection" and then click "OK." This ensures that Windows will not reinstall the files associated with the Denial of Service virus when you restart your computer.

Run Your Anti-virus Program

1. Open your anti-virus program. If you do not have an anti-virus program, consider downloading a free anti-virus program, such as Windows Defender or AVG, using the links in Resources.

2. Update your anti-virus program. Sometimes this is referred to as "updating your virus definitions." If you do not know how to update your anti-virus program, consult the manufacturer's homepage.

3. Run a full scan of your computer using your anti-virus program. Most anti-virus programs give you the option of running a full scan or a quick scan. A full scan will scan your entire computer for the Denial of Service virus. A quick scan will only scan the areas where viruses are most commonly found.
